Dry-Type Transformer – What Is It? What Are the Advantages?
Understand what a dry-type transformer is and the main advantages of this type of product when compared to oil-immersed transformers. Finally, learn about the line of dry-type transformers from União Transformadores.
What is a dry transformer?
Transformers are created for use in electrical power generation and distribution facilities, whether commercial or industrial.
The type of equipment will depend on the needs of each company. There are two types of transformers: submerged, also called oil transformers, and dry transformers.
The oil-filled transformer is used for medium and high voltage in power grids. The dry-type transformer, on the other hand, is used for medium and low voltage.
The dry transformer is a device that does not require oil cooling or insulation, unlike submerged transformers, which are commonly found in public lighting.
Dry transformers use air for cooling and insulation. The main function of a dry transformer is the same as that of an oil-filled transformer, which is to adapt voltage levels.
Dry-type transformers have different applications, being most commonly used in Oil Rigs, Industries, Hospitals, Data Centers, Airports, Control Centers, Mining, Commercial Buildings, Steel Mills, Theaters, Cinemas, Concert Halls, Sports Arenas, and Shopping Malls.
The main benefit is the reduction in maintenance costs, as we will see in detail below.
Check out the advantages of the dry transformer:
- The oil-filled transformer is less safe than the dry-type transformer because the oil used is highly flammable.
- The dry transformer can be installed inside a company, close to the machines. The oil transformer, due to risks, must be at a safe distance.
- Maintaining an oil-filled transformer is more costly than maintaining a dry-type transformer.
- Dry-type transformers also eliminate expenses for other items such as explosion-proof walls, fire doors, drains for collecting insulating liquid, and containment barriers.
- The dry type transformer is an environmentally superior product to the oil-filled one, as there is no risk of leaks and damage to the environment.
Transformers from Transformadores União are built with high technology and a high-quality process, following all the requirements and determinations of technical standards.
